Re:
— Request for the Fleet Management
Date: November 19, 2025
On behalf of the Senior Citizens Commission and after a discussion at the department's
budget hearing workshop on November 12, 2025 (special meeting / minutes on file), it was
proposed that a request come before you for consideration for an activity
van for seniors
based on the following reasons / needs as well as, data collected from our transportation
logs;
e
Activity vans are more shuttle focused on transporting ambulatory (i.e., walking) seniors
and better on fuel efficiency when our wheelchair accessible / mobility van is not needed,
e
They have adequate capacity for typical activities for smaller groups, especially when our
transportation records show that the wheelchair van often has unused seats.
e
They provide more comfort and provide a cozy, car-like ride, which can be more
comfortable for seniors on short trips around town
e
They are ata lower purchase price with reduced maintenance costs compared to full-size
senior vans or buses. They also have better fuel efficiency, which saves money on regular
trips,
e
They also require less specialized driver training than full-sized vans or buses.
Data Submitted as of 12/2/25:
# of passengers (annually) who were in a wheelchair and required the accessibility lift: 59
# of riders using a walker needed to use the wheelchair lift because boarding the accessible van was
too difficult. (An activity van would provide easier and more convenient access for this rider): 26
Total # of ambulatory passengers who do not routinely need an accessible / mobility van: 134
