Dear Mr. Adams:
It has come to my attention that you intend to build on the property between Colonial Drive and
Americana Fabrics in Waterford, CT.
I am writing this letter to urge you to build these homes with sustainability in mind. Where rock
ledges are evident, please consider using geothermal heating and cooling systems. Use electric
heat pumps instead of oil or gas. Install induction or electric stoves instead of gas stoves. Build
strong roofs that will allow future homeowners to easily install solar panels if they wish.
These simple changes may require a greater upfront cost, but they can be used to market to the
buyer as having an all-electric, sustainable home. According to the National Library of Medicine,
children who live in homes with gas stoves are 12.7% more likely to develop asthma!. With the
unpredictability of gas prices, homeowners would prefer to rely on their own electricity to heat
and cool their homes rather than traditional oil and gas methods.
As you work with the town to continue the building process, I hope you will keep this in mind. I
will be submitting this letter to Planning and Zoning as well as the Waterford Conservation
Committee.

It has come to my attention that you intend to build a mobile home site on the property adjacent
to Clark Lane Middle School in Waterford, CT.
I am writing this letter to urge you to build the sites for these homes with sustainability in mind.
Where rock ledges are evident, please consider hook ups for geothermal heating and cooling
systems. Use electric heat pumps instead of oil or gas. Encourage owners to select mobile homes
with induction or electric stoves instead of gas stoves. I know the area has already been cleared
for your site, so I’m hoping it’s not too late to have you consider these items as opposed to
propane tanks, oil tanks, and/or gas lines.
