Jordan Park Green — Nevins Cottage
Invasive Species Management/ Wetland Enhancement Plan
Purpose: To improve the vegetated area between the historic green and Nevins Cottage by
removal of invasive plant species, removal of dead/dying trees and fallen timber, installation of
enhancement plantings and wetland buffer plantings and to perform maintenance of native
vegetation and buffer plantings, fencing and footpaths as required.
Site Description: The wooded area on the eastern edge of the Jordan Park green was
reviewed by a soil scientist and the wetland boundary delineated by Richard Snarski. The
wetland is wooded and subject to seasonal ponding in the central portion from intermittent flow
and seasonal high water table. High water flows discharge via a cut channel to the drainage
system in Rope Ferry Road and eventually to Jordan Millpond. The understory area contains
invasive species such as multi-flora rose, bittersweet vines, knotweed, barberry and euonymous.
Proposed Activity: © The Recreation & Parks Department plans to restore and enhance this
wooded area to promote growth of natural native species and habitat, improve aesthetics and
visibility in and around the wooded area, maintain the cut drainage channel and existing
footpath along the front (south) side of the wetland area and plant a natural buffer area on the
west side of the wooded wetland area to promote pollinators and serve as a public education
area.
Activity will involve cutting and pruning of native trees, cutting and removal of bittersweet vines,
mulit-flora rose, barberry and other invasive shrubs identified, removal of knotweed along the
existing fenceline, and removal of downed limbs. Equipment anticipated to perform this work
will include hand trimmers, chainsaws, hand rakes, and a brush hog attached to a small tractor.
To install the buffer plantings, minimal soil excavation will be conducted to till lawn area. Mulch
will be paced on exposed soil areas to provide bedding for plantings.
The Recreation & Parks Department will coordinate with the Planning Department staff to assist
with identification of invasive species, selection of buffer plantings and maintenance of
vegetation and signage.
