HISTORIC PROPERTIES COMMISSION ANNUAL MEETING

Chairman John O’Neill called the Annual Meeting of the Historic Properties
Commission to order at 7:04 p.m.
Present: Patrick Crotty, Robert Nye, John O’Neill, Debra Walters
Absent: Vivian Brooks, Eileen Olynciw
Appointment of Alternates: R. Nye for V. Brooks
Minutes: Motion by R. Nye, seconded by P. Crotty, to accept the minutes of the
September 14, 2021, meeting
Voting in favor: Unanimous
Election of Officers: Motion by R. Nye, seconded by J. O’Neill to accept the
following slate for FY 2021-2022:
Chair: John O'Neill
Vice Chair: Patrick Crotty
Recording Secretary: Debra Walters
Treasurer: Robert Nye
Voting in favor: Unanimous
FY ‘23 HPC Budget: R. Nye reported on last year’s expenditures which were
minimal due to COVID-19 restrictions. Motion by him, seconded by J. O'Neill, to
request a budget of $400.00, which is unchanged from last year
Voting in favor: Unanimous
Nevins Cottage: R. Nye reported no change regarding the Nevins Cottage
preservation. To date, community members have donated $9,194 to a fund for
such work.
Eugene O'Neill Theater: J. O’Neill reported that in September he met with Tiffani
Gavin, Executive Director, to begin conversations regarding process and funding of
maintaining the buildings on the theater campus.
Cemeteries: P. Crotty reported on his search to find out what became of the
remains in the Brown Farm Burial Ground at Jordan Cove. He inquired about the
Charles Brown family at the Jordan Cemetery, but the family was not listed in the
register. After searching the cemetery grounds, the superintendent reported finding
a stone, not listed in the register, containing the names Charles Brown, (father),
Sarah Gorton Brown (mother), and Lydia Brown (daughter). It would appear that
the family is memorialized here, but it is unknown if their remains were removed to
this location.

Gorton Cemetery ~ After speaking with state crew workers, querying the possibility
of them removing the bull briars threatening to overrun the burial ground, the state
crew did in fact nicely clear the area.
Oil Mill District: Re: Application to the National Historic Register, R. Nye is hoping
for a decision in March.
Adjournment: Motion by R. Nye, seconded by D. Walters to adjourn at
8:38 p.m.
