Dear First Selectman Rob Brule, 
I am writing to express concern about the deteriorating condition of the pickleball and tennis courts in 
Waterford and to advocate for the urgent need for dedicated pickleball courts to accommodate the growing 
number of players of all ages. 
The existing pickle ball and tennis courts have seen significant wear and tear over the years. The surfaces 
are cracked and uneven, making them difficult to play on. Resurfacing and restoring these courts would not 
only enhance the playing experience but also extend their lifespan, ensuring continued enjoyment for the 
community. 
The popularity of pickleball has surged in recent years, especially among seniors. This rapidly growing 
demographic is seeking opportunities for social interaction, exercise, and friendly competition. Pickleball offers 
numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, balance, and coordination. It is a 
low-impact sport suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels, making it an ideal activity for seniors. 
Dedicated pickleball courts would provide a much-needed space for this vibrant community to gather and enjoy 
their favorite sport. 
It appears the conversation surrounding pickleball courts in New London County has been ongoing for quite 
some time. Just five years ago, Colchester was the only town with designated pickleball facilities. However, the 
landscape has dramatically shifted, with Old Lyme, East Lyme, Montville, Norwich, Stonington, Mystic, and 
New London all now offering dedicated courts. Waterford, while possessing existing courts at Leary Park, 
Waterford Beach, and Quaker Hill, has yet to invest in dedicated pickleball facilities. These existing courts 
require care and maintenance to remain suitable for play. Given the surge in pickleball popularity it begs the 
question: Why not Waterford? 
To further address the pickleball court shortage, we propose exploring the possibility of utilizing school 
gymnasiums during after-school hours. This would provide additional playing space and alleviate the 
pressure on outdoor courts, particularly during inclement weather. 
I urge you to prioritize the restoration and resurfacing of the existing pickleball and tennis courts, and to 
allocate funds for the construction of dedicated pickleball courts. By investing in these improvements, you 
will be enhancing the quality of life for Waterford residents of all ages and fostering a stronger sense of 
community.

it will be'a Very Sad Day for History, Ct and the Osprey to lose the nurses building.
Pm a developer this building is not a lost cause. | have been involved with saving 2 factory buildings in Ct now used as
vibrant housing. The nurses building is structurally sound and completely manageable for reusé as a low intensity
historical societies show piéce much like lighthouses all afouind the country on land.

Vm just becoming aware the DEEP 2 years ago made the decision to demo the buildings. | live here and use this park
every day. How is that a-state department can make a decision without better cornmunication to let the citizens of the
state be involved in the final decisions on such a move to demo ALL the historic buildings?
l have been a part of repurposing 3 historic factory buildings in Ct..\’m a developer and real estate broker and with no
self interest in this site other than to simply state for a FACT that the Nurses building is a solid savable historic structure
and should NOT be taken down!

As a developer for 25 years | have had numerous public hearings to get projects approved. This is the standard protocol
signs set and many meetings to address the publics comments before a decision is rendered. Why was this site without a
sign to inform visitors and locals especially that the DEEP 2 years ago was in a process of making decisions on the sites
future? Seems to me as it was done with out much public awareness and frankly shameful if this happens. This site has
been neglected for years however these structures stood the test of time and todays leadership is going to just take
them ALL down without a serious effort to keep the Nurses buildings for generation to come to share in!

My name is Jim. Walsh resident. of Waterford. My dog and | walk this property every morning it’s an absolute treasure
and the citizens of Ct are lucky they haven't lost the buildings to vandals with the many years of neglect.
Certainly { would like Marth’s thoughts on this subject. It would be very helpful if you could share the email addresses to
those in charge of the site. ’m surprisé that | wasn’t aware of the plans to demo all the buildings until recently. It has me
wondering why a public hearing sign wasn’t on site before 'a course of action was made. | highly recommend addressing
this discussion before the wrecking ball is onsite. Foresight before we lose a historic building. Its great news that after
30 years the site is getting funding however | find it to be very hasty to demo ALL the buildings.
My suggestion is as follows:
Demo the hospital “bidg. 2 on the attached plot plan”, keep the nurses building “bidg. 1 on the attached plot plan”. As a
RE Broker and developer I’m keenly aware this is avery solid structure NO one can say it isn’t “just look at the attached
pictures” with significant historical value and home to the osprey. | have beer irivalved in saving and repurposing 3 old
factories in Ct. in Windsor, Berlin and Hartford and will be disgusted with Ct if tt doesn’t save his ONE building! Renovate
the nurses building to a safe condition and make a portion of the first floor for tours like is done for many of the historic
light houses around the country. Sell approximately 15 acres along the western side of the 36 acre site for residential
development to fund thé park and nurses buildirig.
