Inland Wetland Application #C 21-04
198 Shore Road: Stream Channel Stabilization
Application Review Comments
Proposed Activity:
Placement of 6-8 inch diameter rip-rap along the toe of the stream embankments at 198 Shore Road for
the purpose of erosion control and bank stabilization. Approximately 240 linear feet of stream channel
embankment on the north side of the intermittent stream is proposed to be lined with between 5 - 8 feet
width of rip-rap and 180 linear feet of stream channel embankment on the south side of the stream is
proposed to be lined with a 5-8 feet width of rip-rap at the toe. Refer to the attached site plan.
A portion of the rip rap-rap, approximately 200 sq. ft., is proposed within the flagged wetland areas
bordering the northern stream channel between wetland flags #3 and #6, and the embankment above this
area re-graded. Approximately 860 sq. ft. of wetland along the southern channel toe is proposed to be
altered with rip-rap.
The plan proposes to remove the existing vegetation from the southern channel embankment and replant a
20 ft. wide area with a mix of trees, shrubs and herbaceous species. Existing vegetation will also be
removed from 130 linear feet of the northern channel embankment and replanted.
The location of the property is shown on the attached aerial map.
Application Review Comments:
1.
Information of the total cubic yardage of rip-rap, and the typical depth and extent of rip-rap to be
placed at the toe of embankment should be provided. Cross sections indicating this detail should
be provided in locations along both the northern and southern embankments.
2.
An explanation of how the material will be placed at the toe of embankment, e.g. the type of
machinery used, amount of slope disturbance, and any temporary stream crossings, is requested in
order to understand the extent and duration of the regulated activities.
3.
The plan proposes the alteration of 1060 square feet of riparian wetland /stream corridor with rip-
rap to stabilize the toe of bank and support areas of embankment regrading. The application
should discuss alternatives considered to reduce the total area of wetland and stream impacts,
including vegetative solutions, reduced rip-rap extent or use of larger stone in areas to minimize
direct impacts to the stream channel.
;
4.
The extent of tidal influence in the stream channel needs to be identified. Rip-rap placement in
tidally influenced waters is regulated by the State DEEP.

5.
The channel stabilization work should be conducted during low flow summer dry conditions
when the stream cross section is at its minimum.
6. A line of silt fence or other sediment control measure should be installed between the exposed
slope soils and the newly placed rip-rap to control potential sedimentation impacts until such time
that the slopes have become well-vegetated.
7.
Methods for temporary stabilization of the grubbed and re-graded steep slopes within the riparian
corridor are recommended to prevent soil eroding into the stream channel.
8.
The plan should identify whether any existing canopy trees in or along the stream will be
removed.
