Happy Thanksgiving!
| am requesting that the following statement be entered into the correspondence section of the 12/2/2024 Waterford RTM
minutes.
Representatives,
At the 11/12/2024 Waterford Board of Selectmen meeting | proposed tabling Item 10:
Board of Education: To consider and act on a request for an appropriation from the Director of Finance and Operations for
the Board of Education, Joe Mancini, in the amount of $1,147,000 for the Track and Field Turf Replacement and forward
on to the Board of Finance if approved.
| did not vote against this because | am for making necessary improvements to insure Waterford High School has quality
playing fields.
| did however make a motion to table that failed. The reason for my motion to table was due to a ongoing study on turf
field PFAS/ microplastic run off funded by Groton, CT. | wanted to wait for these results before making a final vote to
approve a turf field made mostly of plastic (a portion of the field is made with rubber, but the "blades of grass" are made of
polymers.
There have been recent studies that show that microplastics find their way into the human brain and reproductive systems
and contain endocrine disruptors that impact hormones.
President- Elect Trump's nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services has been quoted as saying the following
on the subject of microplastics:
"It's time to take the problem of microplastics seriously"
There maybe some that will say turf is good for safety, that may be true (While also true for a well maintained grass field)
but | would encourage the question what type of field does Waterford Youth Football play on? Perhaps that is a question
that also deserves attention as well.
| am not asking for this body to vote against this tonight, | am ask that this body tables until the results of the Groton study
are known.
