44 Way Hill Road: Excavation of Sediment, Pond Maintenance
Proposed Activity:
The application is for maintenance of an existing man-made pond located on a residential lot at 44 Way
Hill Road. The pond is located in poorly drained alluvial soil underlain by sand and gravel adjacent to
Lakes Pond Brook. Pond hydrology is supported by groundwater and surface flow diverted from the
brook by a 12 inch pve pipe. High water flows from the pond back to the brook about 50 ft. south of the
pond through a 12 inch pve outlet pipe.
The proposal involves removal of accumulated sediment from the pond bottom and increasing the depth
to 8-10 feet. Existing shrub and herbaceous vegetation supported along portions of the pond edge will be
disturbed by excavation activity. The 12 inch inlet and outlet pipes will be blocked with sandbags and the
pond water level lowered prior to excavation. Excavated material will be placed in a stockpile to de-
water prior to removal from the site. Excavation work is anticipated to be completed in 2 days.
The property location and existing pond are shown on the attached aerial maps.
Application Review Comments:
The activity involves @ 4,000 square feet of temporary disturbance to a waterbody. The soils
surrounding the pond and comprising the rear yard are identified as poorly drained Rippowam fine sandy
loam. The pond was excavated sometime in the 1970’s to early 1980’s based on a review of State of CT
aerial photographs.
The proposed excavation will not affect the adjacent stream or alter the poorly drained alluvial soils
surrounding the pond. The subsurface sand and gravel materials supporting the pond are not anticipated
to result in siltation impacts to the adjacent wetlands.
Perimeter sediment controls have been designated on the plan for the de-watering area and the stockpile.
A permit was issued by the Conservation Commission in 1995 for modifications to the pond including fill
in a portion of the pond to construct a pool. The permit conditions included establishment of native
wetland species along the pond perimeter to stabilize the bank and provide habitat diversity, and
maintained a 5-10 ft. vegetative buffer between the lawn and pond edge.
Re-planting of these vegetative buffer areas affected by the excavation activity is recommended.
