RE: Archival Storage in Town Building for Waterford Historical Society
Dear Rob:
Thanks very much for meeting with me yesterday afternoon to discuss a growing
concern to the members of the Waterford Historical Society. You have been interested
in our activities related to Jordan Green and elsewhere in our town, so hopefully
together we can develop a solution to the current situation with our archives.
To recap our discussion: Soon after the Waterford Historical Society came into being,
the Town invited us to use the southwest room at the former library building, now called
Jordan Park House, for our office and the northwest room there for our archives. In the
archival room Mrs. Susan Bush, the first Municipal Historian and an active member of
our Society, maintained records and served people interested in our archival documents.
Unfortunately, a couple of years ago the Town disconnected electricity for both of those
rooms and disconnected the bathrooms in the basement. The result has impacted our
archives, since we cannot view our records well nor control humidity and heat. Many of
our boxes of documents in the basement are also affected.
Our Society received a copy of a letter written September 30, 2022, from the Historic
Properties Commission and the Municipal Historian requesting Town funding to
perform necessary repairs and site work on Jordan Park House. Our Society affirms
that need and hopes that the Town will fund that work. However, we are concerned
about the impact of that work on the security and condition of our archival space.
Since the Town may have other Town-owned buildings nearby with empty rooms, please
consider identifying space for the Waterford Historical Society to move all its archives
soon. Security, low humidity, appropriate heat and light would cease to be concerns for
our archives and would enable people to conduct research. Additionally, we would be
able to pursue one of our goals, which is to organize all our archives in a manner
consistent with that of other historical organizations.
