Town of

Description of Timber Harvest Activity
Limb-It-Less Logging, LLC will be implementing a selection timber harvest on the
property of Millers Pond Company, LLC located on Millers Pond Rd. in the Town of
Quaker Hill, Map 31 Lot 5644 containing 20 +/- acres and more particularly
identified on the attached “Timber Harvest Map Property of Millers Pond
Company, LLC”, for the Fall/Winter of 2023/2024. The objective of the harvest is
to thin crop trees that have matured following the previous harvest my company
executed 21 years ago. We will also be removing dead oak and ash trees that
have died due to spongy moth defoliation and EAB. We will utilize a common
landing area on the property of Ann Avery as we will be harvesting these
properties consecutively.
Harvesting equipment
The equipment that will be used on the site will be a Feller Buncher, log skidder,
and a forwarder. The Feller Buncher mechanically cuts the trees and directionally
fells them away from wetlands, watercourses, and the leave trees. The skidder
will be used to bunch the trees in the woods, and the forwarder will transport the
logs to the landing where the logs will be loaded on trucks for transport. This mix
of machines and techniques will provide low impact to the forestland during and
after the timber harvest.
Stream/Wetland Crossings
No more than 50% of the mature crow ratio will be removed within 100 feet of
any wetlands or watercourses during this harvest operation. There is one
perennial stream that runs through the property flowing in from the northeast
property line and following the northern property line flowing southwest then
terminating into Millers Pond. Two stream crossings identified as SC-1 and SC-2
on the Timber Harvest map will be needed to facilitate the harvest operations. A
20’ solid top portable bridge will be used to facilitate this crossing at SC-1. The
crossing is approximately 10 feet in width. The approaches are stable so no
impact to the stream approaches is expected. SC-2 is crossing the same stream.
This crossing has second overflow channel that appears to only flow during times
of heavy runoff. The main stream channel will be crossed utilizing our portable

bridge panels. We will install temporary corduroy in the over flow channel to
facilitate the crossing. This crossing is very rocky and stable so no erosion or
sedimentation is expected. SC-1 crossing will in installed first. We will finish that
section, remove the bridge crossing and the approaches will be stabilized prior to
installing the SC-2 crossing.
Sedimentation and Erosion Control plans
Primary haul/skid roads will utilize the existing roads that we established during
the previous harvest. Temporary haul/skid roads that will be constructed will run
along contours when possible and not against them. Any sections of the haul/skid
roads that have significant slopes will have water bars installed upon starting the
harvest and will be always maintained during the harvest. Upon completion of
the harvest, permanent water bars will be installed and any sections of the
haul/skid roads that have significant slopes will be seeded and mulched to
prevent erosion and sedimentation. The approaches to SC-1 and SC-2 will be
mulched and have hay bales staked on both approaches that will prevent
sedimentation until the natural vegetation takes hold. If at any time during the
harvest excessive rainfall occurs or the ground becomes soft, the harvest will be
postponed until favorable conditions prevail and all preventive measures
mentioned above will be implemented to reduce any risk of erosion and
sedimentation.
Timber Harvest BMP’s
Upland areas: Stumps will be cut as low as possible. Trees will be directionally
felled to minimize residual stand damage. Residual slash from the harvest will be
lopped to 5’. Water bars will be installed on slopes. Haul/Skid Roads and landing
areas will be seeded and mulched.
Stream Crossings: Upon completion of the harvest, the portable bridge will be
removed and the approaches will be mulched and hay bales will be staked to
prevent sedimentation.

Buffer zones/Filter strips: No more than 50% of the mature crown ratio will be
harvested in these areas with exception of areas that may have trees with
exceptional storm damage, spongy moth mortality, or EAB infestation. Skid trails
will be located out of buffer zones/filter strips whenever possible. Trees will be
felled away from wetlands/watercourses, when possible, to minimize
disturbance. No slash will be left in wetland or watercourses to impede water
flow. All BMP’s and erosion control measures will strictly be followed in
accordance to the CT DEEP’s Best Management Practices Field Guide, 2012
edition.
