I would like to add a public comment in support of the RTM’s decision to decrease the proposed increase to the Board of Education
budget. After reading the public comments on the site, I’m noticing a common theme. It appears that many BOE employees are concerned
that the BOE budget is being reduced. I was of the understanding that the budget amount from last year cannot be reduced by state
statute, The RTM, by a bipartisan vote, is interested in reducing the request for an increase from 1.5 million dollars by $470,000.
We are ina pandemic. The future of the town is very uncertain. It is unclear what resources would be needed if and when the schools return
in the fall. There are families in the town who are struggling to get food on the table, who are struggling to meet basic needs, and the BOE is
asking for a 1.5 million dollar increase? All of the teachers will get raises while other taxpayers in this town have fost their jobs or their
previous salaries? Getting a budget increase of any kind during this pandemic should be considered a huge win. This should be a time that the
whole town rolls up its sleeves and figures out a way to save money.
