Town of Waterford Shellfish Commission Meeting Minutes of August 2, 2022 P a g e | 1 Town of Waterford Shellfish Commission Regular Meeting Minutes of Tuesday, August 2, 2022 7:00 p.m. – Town Hall 1. Call to order Chairman Lawson called the regular meeting of the Waterford Shellfish Commission to order at 7:02 p.m. after establishing a quorum. 2. Pledge of Allegiance Everyone in attendance stood for the Pledge of Allegiance 3. Roll Call Present were Commissioners Lawson, Francolino, Drennen and Jamroga. Absent were Commissioners Calkins and Healy. 4. Approval of the June 7, 2022 regular meeting minutes Motion made by Commissioner Francolino, seconded by Commissioner Drennen to approve the June 7, 2022 regular meeting minutes as reviewed and submitted. Discussion, none, voice vote 4-0, all in favor, motion carried. 5. Correspondence Chairman Lawson reviewed several correspondences he received regarding Waterford Shellfish business over the past month and stated he will continue to forward everything he receives to the Commission members in between meetings to keep everyone up to date. 6. Treasurer’s Report Commissioner Francolino reviewed the report generated from the Finance office through June 30, 2022. Chairman Lawson stated he has submitted Warden’s hours for the time period between December and May for payment. Motion made by Commissioner Drennen, seconded by Commissioner Jamroga to approve the Treasurer’s Report as reviewed. Discussion, none, voice vote, 4-0, all in favor, motion carried. 7. Monthly Monitoring and Sampling Report Town of Waterford Shellfish Commission Meeting Minutes of August 2, 2022 P a g e | 2 Chairman Lawson indicated that the recreational shell fishing areas are currently open and that due to the lack of rain there have been very few closures this season. A discussion was held regarding the temporary closure of Riverside Grocery and the impact it will have on permit sales. 8. New Business The Commission does not have any New Business to discuss this month. 9. Old Business a. Discussion regarding the Waterford Shellfish Commission FY2022/2023 budget request. Chairman Lawson stated he has not heard that the budget request was approved but has not been asked for additional information so he is assuming that it was. The financial report generated from the Finance Office does not reflect the deposit because it only reports through June 30th. b. Discussion regarding oyster restock and determine the best date/time to do so. Chairman Lawson reviewed the tide chart for the month of August with the Commission to determine the best date and time that will work for everyone willing to help pick up and distribute oysters into the recreational shell fishing areas. It was determined that Saturday, August 13th would be the best time for everyone involved as the tide is high at 11:45 a.m. and they will have until at least 1:30 p.m. to distribute them into the recreational shell fishing areas. Ten thousand oysters will be picked up on that day and there are two boats and four people who have agreed to help distribute them. A discussion was held regarding the best locations for them to ensure the best survival rate. The Commission members agreed that in the absence of available little neck clams the oysters will be an acceptable substitute for anyone who purchases a permit to harvest them. c. Discussion regarding progress made to the Waterford Shellfish Plan. Chairman Lawson proposed that the Commission review the Waterford Shellfish Plan at the September meeting and discuss any changes or additions that they feel should be included in the Plan. He stated the Plan can be found on the Town of Waterford Shellfish page and is approximately fifteen pages in total. He encourage all Commission members to attend the meeting to review and edit the document. 10. Public input specifically regarding business pertaining to the Waterford Shellfish Commission.
