Town of Waterford Shellfish Commission
Regular Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, April 4, 2023
7:00 p.m. -Waterford Town Hall
** Second Floor Meeting Room**
1. Call to Order
Chairman Lawson called the regular meeting of the Waterford
Shellfish Commission to order at 7:00 p.m. after establishing a
quorum.
2. Pledge of Allegiance
All in attendance stood for the Pledge of Allegiance.
3. Roll Call
Present were Commissioners Lawson, Drennen and Calkins. Absent
were Commissioners Healy, Porter, Jamroga and Francolino.
4. Approval of the March 7, 2023 Regular Meeting Minutes
Motion made by Commissioner Lawson, seconded by Commissioner
Drennen to approve the March 7, 2023 regular meeting minutes as
filed. Voice vote, 3-0, all in favor, motion carried.
5. Correspondence

Chairman Lawson stated that he has been forwarding all
correspondence relating to the Waterford Shellfish Commission to
the Commissioners as he receives them in between meetings to keep
everyone as current as possible.
6. Treasurer’s Report
Chairman Lawson reviewed the Treasurer’s Report with the
Commission members in the absence of Commissioner Francolino.
The most recent report was not available as of the time of the
meeting.
Motion made by Commissioner Drennen, seconded by
Commissioner Calkins to approve the Treasurer’s Report, voice vote,
3-0, all in favor, motion carried.
7. Monthly Monitoring and Sampling Report
Chairman Lawson stated that the recreational shell fishing areas are
open for the 2023 season.
8. New Business
a. Discussion/vote to purchase sign posts for necessary signage in
the recreational shell fishing areas.
Motion made by Commissioner Drennen, seconded by
Commissioner Calkins to authorize Chairman Lawson to purchase
four ten foot posts, two channel and two square in the amount of
two hundred and eighty dollars. Voice vote, 3-0, all in favor,
motion carried. Once received the Commission members will
coordinate the installation of the posts weather permitting.
9. Old Business

a. Discussion regarding updates to the Town of Waterford Shellfish
Commission Shellfish Resource Management Plan.
Chairman Lawson thanked Commissioner Drennen for taking on the
role of updating the Plan and maps for the Commission in
conjunction with the Connecticut Department of Agriculture Bureau
of Aquaculture. The Plan is now updated with the most current data
and the map has been updated to better depict the areas that can be
utilized for recreational shell fishing. A copy of the updated map
will be available to all who purchase permits this season once it is
approved to do so by the proper authorities. The Commission will
forward the updated map and Plan to the First Selectman’s office
and the Town Attorney for review and final approval prior to
posting it to the Towns website.
b. Discussion regarding restock for the 2023 season.
Chairman Lawson has secured thirty bags of little neck clams and is
hoping to secure additional little neck clams for the season. He will
keep the Commission posted as to when they will be delivered and
distributed into the waters.
c. Discussion regarding progress to the FY2024 Waterford Shellfish
Commission proposed budget meetings.
Chairman Lawson stated the meetings are held in May but is unsure
of the exact date. He will let the Commission know when a date is
set for the meeting so that a Commission member who is available
can attend to answer any questions from the Board.
10. Public Input specifically regarding business pertaining to the
Waterford Shellfish Commission.
There was no one from the public present to address the

Commission at this meeting.
11. Adjournment
There being no further business to discuss the Commission
adjourned the meeting at 7:45 p.m.
